Choirs Selected to Attend Inaugural International Festival

19/05/2016

Choirs from three continents, four countries and six cities will congregate in Saint John, New Brunswick for the inaugural international choral festival called Fundy Sound – A Choral Festival by the Bay. The festival launches on Canadian Multiculturalism Day June 27th and ends as the Canada Day fireworks begin July 1st.

From Nairobi to Hong Kong, from Boston and New Jersey to Laval, singers with diverse cultures, languages, musical styles and a range of ages will unite at the University of New Brunswick Saint John to become one mass, unified choir under the direction of top choral conductor and composer Z. Randall Stroope. Together, they will perform in a Grand Finale concert at the Imperial Theatre on Canada Day.

The mass choir of 250 voices includes the new “Fundy Sound Chorus” comprised of local choristers under the direction of Janet Kidd. The individual choirs will also perform at significant landmarks in greater Saint John.

Two of the North American choirs have sung with superstars such as Celine Dion, The Rolling Stones and Queen Latifah. One choir is composed of talented orphans from Africa and two of the choirs have Chinese roots.

 Choir Bios:

Traveling from Nairobi is the Regalia Voices of Africa Choir, which used online crowd- funding to raise money to attend this festival. Conductor Simon Richard Wanguku Wachira founded it in 2007 with the goal of providing unique educational and performance opportunities to orphaned boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 19 at the Elroi Children’s Home, who are from various religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. In its performances, the choir tells the story of Africa, not as a continent ravaged by wars and famine, but by reflecting the good.

The Good Hope School Choir is one of Hong Kong’s longest-established and finest choirs. Founded in 1959, the choir has participated in international festivals and competitions including the Joliette Music Festival (Festival de Lanaudiere) in Canada, the Youth Music Festival Girls’ Choir Category in Vienna and cultural exchange tours to Beijing, Hungary and Australia. This multi-award winning choir is under the direction of Ms. Melody Tang, an accomplished vocalist and graduate of the Hong Kong Academy of Performance.

The New Jersey Youth Chorus (NJYC) has participated in numerous choral festivals, regularly hosts visiting youth choirs and music educator workshops, and has an active “Kids for Kids” philanthropic program. Recent highlights include the XLVIII Super Bowl with Queen Latifah, The Chieftains in NYC, the Canadian Brass, and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Patricia Joyce is the founder and artistic director of NJYC and has a history of conducting honours and award winning choirs.

Le Choeur des Jeunes de Laval is a 50 member mixed vocal ensemble composed exclusively of singers from college and university level. In recent years, they have performed with international star Celine Dion and twice with the Rolling Stones in concerts in Quebec.

The Boston Eastern Heritage Chorus (BHEC) is a 50-member chorus with a diverse membership drawn from gifted vocalists from all walks of life. Their mission is to showcase Chinese culture and choral arts, promote Chinese-Western cultural exchange, develop broader public knowledge and appreciation of Chinese and American vocal arts, all in the spirit of fun, cooperation and harmony. Under the leadership of Music Director Qiao Wanjun, they have won awards at several international festivals and competitions including in China.

There is still a short window of opportunity for local singers to join the Fundy Sound Chorus, and a limited number of complimentary memberships available (value up to $289.) This host choir, and each choir, will be showcased individually in free noon and evening performances throughout the region.
